Cancer

Cancer is a difficult health condition which has a number of widely used treatments:

  1. Chemotherapy (chemo) is a type of treatment that is aimed at killing or slowing down the growth of cancer cells by using special drugs, making tumors smaller before radiation therapy or surgery and helping other meds work more effectively. Chemotherapy can be oral, used as injections, IV (intravenous), IP (intraperitoneal), IA (intra-arterial), intrathecal and topical.
  2. Radiation therapy is used to easy the symptoms of cancer, kill cancer cells and slow down their growth and further spreading. It can be of two types: internal radiation therapy and external beam radiation therapy.
  3. Hormone therapy uses hormones in treatment of cancer. This type is usually used to treat breast and prostate cancer and is divided into two groups: the ones that interfere with the way hormones act in the patient’s body and those that block the ability of the body to produce hormones.
  4. Immunotherapy helps the patient’s immune system to fight cancer and is a biological therapy. It includes cytokines, BCG, treatment vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and some others.

It is important to note that only your doctor is able to prescribe you with the best medication or a combination of drugs to treat cancer effectively.
